2. The first mock-ups were met with mixed reviews: some like, some dislike, no consensus. However, a few good questions were raised. Are these covers too light? Too literal? Too frivolous? Too feminine?

I realized a few things: I misconstrued the tone of what is actually a pretty dark and sombre work; it was going to be challenging to satisfy everyone involved, since each person had slightly different interpretations of the book’s themes; and I might not find a single image that successfully represents such a diffuse body of work.
