James Lorimer & Company is an independent Toronto based publishing house active in children’s and teen publishing, and adult nonfiction. We are very active marketers of our books making use of digital media, targeting school and library buyers in Canada and the US. We also use all the traditional channels for promoting and marketing our adult and children’s/teen titles in Canada.

We are seeking a creative digital marketer and sales coordinator to join our downtown Toronto office. This position involves a wide range of marketing activities for both our children's and adult lists. The ideal candidate will have a mix of creative and analytical abilities and a passion for books and the Canadian publishing industry.

Digital marketing responsibilities:

  • Create and execute email marketing campaigns to our primary markets of schools, libraries, and bookstores
  • List management, contact analysis, and lead generation tasks
  • Report on email analytics
  • Develop a strategic digital and print advertising program
  • Budgeting and reporting
  • Copywriting and project management for print and digital marketing pieces
  • Content management and development of company websites
  • Manage relationships with review journals and ad sales reps to negotiate ad rates and packages
  • Develop and execute social media strategy
  • Research and develop list of key influencers
  • Content development and presentation of webinars
  • Coordinate trade shows, exhibits, and displays

Metadata responsibilities:

  • Ongoing maintenance and enhancements to bibliographic records within our ONIX database, HiPoint
  • Work with developers of HiPoint to transition to ONIX 3
  • Act as primary contact for data recipients
  • Disseminate weekly and ad hoc ONIX feeds to vendors, distributors, and aggregators
  • Troubleshoot and resolve metadata issues with data recipients, eBOUND, and Booknet Canada

Sales and marketing coordination responsibilities:

  • Liaise with distributors in the US and the UK to plan seasonal lists, deliver metadata, fill purchase orders, and monitor inventory needs
  • Inventory management and reporting across all warehouse locations, including analysis of low stock titles, proposing reprints, and other publishing decisions
  • Arrange and oversee stock shipments for new titles and replenishment stock in coordination with warehouse manager
  • Maintain stock status codes on titles and communicate status changes to sales and order desk staff
  • Generate sales reports and gap analysis
  • Prepare seasonal online catalogues and sales materials for sales reps, libraries, and bookstores


  • Post-secondary degree and completion of a publishing certificate preferred
  • Three years work experience in publishing industry
  • Excellent copywriting skills and attention to detail
  • Proficiency with Excel
  • Strong understanding of ONIX and industry best practices for metadata
  • Digital project management experience; experience building websites a plus
  • Familiarity with project management tools and experience using email marketing software
  • Experience managing bibliographic databases and digital asset management systems such as CoreSource
  • Familiarity with BNC Salesdata, Catalist, and Bookmanager
  • Experience using Amazon Vendor Central
  • Strong communication and presentation skills

Our digital marketer and sales coordinator works closely with our fulltime promotion person and our in-house account representative, and with our in-house distribution operation Formac Lorimer Books. He/she reports to our publisher.
