Production Manager, Dundurn Press

Dundurn Press, a leading independent, inclusive Canadian publisher located in Toronto, is hiring a full-time Production Manager to work on Dundurn’s varied list of print and e-books that range from trade fiction to highly illustrated books. The position requires a level-headed multi-tasker who is a creative problem-solver accustomed to working in a fast-paced environment with high-volume workloads. The Production Manager’s main responsibilities are to develop, maintain, and track production schedules, to build strong relationships with print vendors and negotiate competitive pricing models, and to support the design department as needed.

Further responsibilities include the following:

Production

  • Maintain active schedule for all front list titles and work with the editorial and sales departments to ensure a balance between workload and optimal release dates that maximize the revenue potential of each title
  • Send out for and process print quotations
  • Evaluate print quotations and, in conjunction with sales, editorial, and the publisher, select the appropriate print run and vendor for front list and/or reprint titles
  • Provide feedback on format choices, pricing, and scheduling as requested
  • Prepare print ready files (do pre-flights) and transfer files to printers
  • Troubleshoot any production or design issues

Design

  • Design and format interior text as necessary
  • Input editorial and design changes to formatted pages

Management

  • Responsible for ensuring that all books are designed, printed, and shipped on schedule
  • Chair weekly meetings to review the progress of titles in design and proofing stages, pinpoint any issues, and trouble shoot
  • Forecast fiscal year printing
  • Track and record resources spent producing each title and report any anomalies
  • Keep up to date on new and/or emerging developments in technology and/or design trends
  • Continually review and/or develop processes for streamlining workflow to ensure maximum efficiency and productivity

Qualifications

  • Post-secondary degree
  • Five years + publishing experience in design, production, and/or graphic communications
  • Thorough knowledge of pre-press and printing processes
  • Proficient in Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator, Acrobat), Microsoft Word, and Excel on a Mac platform
  • Exceptional organizational, prioritizing, and multitasking abilities required
  • Exceptional ability to multitask without compromising quality
