Description
Cormorant Books is looking for an enthusiastic self-starter to join our dynamic team. Located in Toronto’s Chinatown, Cormorant Books publishes award-winning and best-selling books for adults and young readers. This entry level position reports to the Managing Director and touches on many aspects of publishing: acquisition, marketing, production, sales, publication, promotion, and publicity.
Administration
- Manages outgoing correspondence (mailing, tracking)
- Filing of author contracts, financial documents
- Orders office supplies
- Supports other staff as required
Author relations
- Manages process for newly acquired books
- Distributes acquisition announcements to Quill & Quire, Publishers’ Weekly, etc.
- Maintains and updates author database, contact list, etc.
- Ensures author receives authors’ copies on delivery of printed books
Production
- Assigns ISBN, keeps ISBN log
- Applies for CIP data in Canada and LCCNs in US
- Liaises with distributors, UTP in Canada and Orca in the US
Marketing
- Assists with social media
- Assists in the preparation of the Title Information Sheets, the catalogues, and materials for sales conferences
- Collects weekly data from BookNet
- Analyzes BookNet data for key titles – copies sold/on order/on hand for Independent Accounts, Indigo Books, Wholesalers.
- Cover image maintenance: Changing colour space (RGB vs. CMYK) for staff purposes; Changing image size when necessary
- Assists in the preparation for international book fairs
Promotion & Publicity
- Co-ordinates awards, including keeping award database up-to-date, tracks deadlines, completes submission processes
- Works with editor/author/marketing coordinator to prepare list for and complete ARC mailings
- Works with editor/author/marketing coordinator to prepare list for promotional mailings
- Responds to requests for desk or review copies
- Maintains the publicity contact list
- Replying to emails from the Contact Us pages
- Assists in setting up and holding book launches
- Assists with author events, such as signings
- Using various search engines, finds and keeps track of mentions, reviews, profiles, interviews – any media relating to authors, books, or the company itself
- Provides sales reps with publicity and promotion updates
Cormorant Books encourages applications from persons with a minimum of a bachelor of arts and, ideally, a diploma or degree in publishing. A can-do attitude and an interest in Canadian authors are essential. A belief that sometime in this decade the Toronto Blue Jays will make it to the World Series, and a preference for burritos are an asset.
This is a full-time position. It will require work at our offices in Toronto's Chinatown, as well as some evening and weekend events.
