Description

Orca Book Publishers is a successful, growing, independent Canadian children’s book publisher, based in Victoria, BC. With 1200 active titles in print and digital formats and 90 new titles each year, we have a vibrant, well-respected publishing program. We are looking for a professional, motivated person to join our team. The ideal candidate will bring a passion for books, a commitment to innovative design and a willingness to work with an amazing team. We have a preference for a designer who can work in our office in Victoria, BC, although we will consider an applicant from outside of Victoria.

Working with the sales, marketing and production teams, the successful candidate will be responsible for the production of all sales and marketing materials, print and online.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Manage and execute a high volume of diverse design requests from the sales and marketing departments.
  • Coordinate projects from multiple stakeholders and manage the schedule of deadlines for all assets.
  • Meet deadlines and see projects through to the end, which may include sending files to publications or printers, or printing materials in-house.
  • Create original layouts as well as working from existing templates.
  • Attend marketing team meetings and contribute ideas to marketing plans.
  • Design print materials such as:
    • Ads in newspapers and magazines
    • Flyers, sellsheets and catalogues
    • Bookmarks, postcards, posters and other promotional materials
    • Teacher’s Guides and other ancillary content
    • Display material like signage, stands and other packaging
  • Design online assets such as:
    • Newsletters using Constant Contact
    • Banners for website and newsletters
    • Graphics for social media
    • Custom cover thumbnails for special collections and bundles

Qualifications:

  • Exceptional understanding of basic design principles with an eye for beautiful, effective and eye-catching print and online design.
  • Formal training and professional design experience, ideally in a creative industry like publishing, advertising, website development, media, etc.
  • Proven ability to manage multiple projects on-time and with high rates of client satisfaction.
  • Up-to-date knowledge of current trends in design and typography.
  • Proficiency with Adobe InDesign CS; Photoshop, Illustrator, Acrobat, MS Office (Excel and Word). Experience designing in html is an asset.
  • Experience with project management software like Asana or email programs like Constant Contact or MailChimp is an asset.
  • Familiarity with Mac platforms and hardware.
  • Creative, highly efficient and organized.
  • Ability to work independently and to contribute as part of a team.
  • Interest in the Canadian children’s book publishing industry.
  • Enjoy working with people and other animals in an office environment.
