Common Deer Press launches children’s book writing contest

Common Deer Press is looking for the next Anne of Green Gables or Chronicles of Narnia. Co-owners Ellie Sipila and Kirsten Marion have issued a challenge to Canadian writers, calling it the “Uncommon Quest for a Great Canadian Children’s Novel.” They are inviting authors to submit a middle-grade or YA novel manuscript that will “take young readers on an emotional rollercoaster, fill them with wonder and transport them to other worlds, reminding them that there is enduring magic, enchantment and wonder, as long as they look for it.”

The two-year-old indie press is offering a publishing contract and $1,000 for first prize; second and third place will also receive contracts and $500 and $250 respectively. “We are a young press with a lot of heart,” says publisher Marion, “and we understand what it is to be new to an industry. So, we have a special spot in our hearts for emerging writers. With luck, this contest will give us the chance to showcase some bright new Canadian stars and introduce their splendid work to children across Canada.”

The contest is open to Canadian residents and non-resident Canadian citizens and entries can be submitted between Sept. 1, 2018 and Jan. 31, 2019.
