Spring preview 2015: novels

CLASSICAL MYSTERIES

spring-21Best-selling author Anne Emery turns the clock back to 1989 in a prequel to her hugely popular Collins-Burke series of mystery novels. Ruined Abbey (ECW) finds Father Bennan Burke called across the ocean from his home in New York City when his sister is arrested in connection with a terrorist plot and the murder of a Special Branch detective.

Gail Bowen returns with the 15th instalment in her popular Joanne Kilbourn series of mysteries. In 12 Rose Street (M&S), Joanne is shaken by a startling revelation from the past disclosed by shady – and potentially violent – characters determined to prevent her husband from winning the race to be Regina’s next mayor.

In Safe as Houses (Cormorant), author Susan Glickman peels back the veneer of gentility from a cozy Toronto neighbourhood to reveal the seething incivility and violence beneath. Liz Ryerson’s idea of Hillcrest Village as a quaint little community is shattered when she stumbles across the corpse of a local real-estate agent while out walking her dog.
