Memoirist Sushmita Banerjee killed in Afghanistan

Indian author Sushmita Banerjee was killed by Taliban militants outside of her home in Afghanistan on Thursday. She was 49 years old.

Sushmita Banerjee was known for her 1995 best-selling memoir, A Kabuliwala’s Bengali Wife, which recounted life with her Afghan husband and escape from Taliban house arrest. In 2003, the book was adapted into the Bollywood film Escape from Taliban.

According to BBC News, Banerjee had recently returned to Afghanistan to be with her husband.
