Kate Beaton wins Harvey Award

Canadian cartoonist Kate Beaton has won her first Harvey Award for her entertaining history webcomic Hark! A Vagrant. Beaton took home the prize for Best Online Comics Work, a category in which she was nominated last year.

The Harvey Awards, which were presented Aug. 20 at the Baltimore Comic-Con, are the only industry awards whose winners are voted on by a full body of comics professionals. Named after Harvey Kurtzman, founding editor of Mad, the awards recognize outstanding work in comics and sequential art. Other Canadian winners this year include author Bryan Lee O’Malley (Best Graphic Album, Scott Pilgrim Vol. 6: Scott Pilgrim’s Finest Hour) and Darwyn Cooke (Best Artist, Best Cartoonist, Richard Stark’s Parker: The Outfit).

Montreal press Drawn & Quarterly is publishing the print collection of Hark! A Vagrant this fall. Look for Beaton on the cover of the upcoming Oct. issue of Q&Q.
