Michel Rabagliati wins Doug Wright Award best book

Doug Wright AwardsMichel Rabagliati’s semi-autobiographical graphic novel Paul Joins the Scouts (Conundrum Press) has won the Doug Wright Award for best book of 2013.

The Doug Wright Awards, which recognize the best English-language comics and graphic novels, were presented Saturday night in conjunction with the Toronto Comic Arts Festival.

Steven Gilbert took home the Spotlight Award for his self-published debut graphic novel, The Journal of the Main Street Secret Lodge, and Emily Carroll’s “Out of Skin” won the Pigskin Peters Award for experimental or avant-garde comics.

The winners were selected by a jury comprising Jesse Brown, Nina Bunjevac, and Nick Mandaag.

During the evening, the artists behind the iconic Second World War–era Canadian Whites comic series were inducted into the Canadian Cartoonists Hall of Fame. The honour was accepted by surviving artists Jack Tremblay, Gerry Lazare, Murray Karn, and Mel Crawford.
