The Newfoundland and Labrador Credit Union, in partnership with the province’s Literary Arts Foundation and Writers’ Alliance, has announced the shortlist for its biennial Fresh Fish Award, presented to an emerging Newfoundland writer not yet published in book form.
The prize recognizes an unpublished book-length manuscript of fiction, creative non-fiction, poetry, or short stories.
Each of the following finalists will receive $1,000 and will be invited to read from their respective titles at an event at the Christina Parker Gallery in St. John’s on Nov. 9:
- Sharon Bala, The Boat People
- Eva Crocker, Barreling Forward and Other Stories
- Susie Taylor, Dispelling the Myths
The winner will be awarded a $5,000 cash prize along with $1,000 toward professional editing services and a sculpture by artist Jim Maunder. The awards ceremony, hosted by Newfoundland Lieutenant-Governor Frank F. Fagan and Patricia Fagan, will take place at the Government House in St. John’s on Nov. 10.
