The Newfoundland and Labrador Arts Council has announced that St. John’s author and theatre artist Sara Tilley is the recipient of this year’s BMO Winterset Award for her 2015 novel Duke (Pedlar Press). The award offers one first-place prize of $12,500 and two runner-up prizes of $3,000 each year to honour excellence in published works of any genre by authors native to the province.

Runners-up Stan Dragland and Leslie Vryenhoek were recognized for Strangers & Others: Newfoundland Essays (Pedlar Press), an essay collection; and Ledger of the Open Hand (Breakwater Books), a novel, respectively.

A jury comprised of author and playwright Chris Brookes, 2015 Winterset Award winner Megan Gail Coles, and Winterset in Summer Literary Festival board member Randy Street selected the winner and two finalists from 31 submissions by publishers across the province.

Tilley, Dragland, and Vryenhoek received their prizes at a March 26 ceremony at Government House in St. John’s.
