Canadian non-profit CODE has announced the finalists for this year’s Burt Award for First Nations, Inuit, and Métis Literature, recognizing the best and most culturally relevant titles aimed at young adults.

A peer assessment group selected the following authors:

  • Katherena Vermette, The Break (House of Anansi Press)

The recipient will receive a $12,000 prize, with the two remaining finalists awarded $2,000 each. At least 2,500 copies of all three books will be distributed to First Nations, Inuit, and Métis youth across Canada through libraries, schools, and other organizations.

The winning title will be announced at an awards ceremony hosted by CBC’s Shelagh Rogers in Edmonton on Nov. 23.
