AGO to debut Alain de Botton exhibition based on new book

The Art Gallery of Ontario is on a roll when it comes to bringing in high-profile names. Fresh off the attention it’s receiving as the first North American institution to exhibit David Bowie Is comes word that, in spring 2014, the Toronto museum will host Art as Therapy, co-curated by British philosopher and author Alain de Botton and art historian John Armstrong.

The exhibition accompanies their co-authored book of the same name, which provides 150 examples of outstanding art, architecture, and design, with chapters that demonstrate art’s ability to improve various facets of human life.

Using the AGO’s permanent collection as a starting point, de Botton and Armstrong will visually present the theories behind the book, which will be released on Oct. 14, and is supported by a website (artastherapy.com) and mobile app.
