Cover to cover: Marijke Friesen on designing The Umbrella Mender

3. The author and publisher wanted something visually evocative of the era in which the book takes place. They were very interested in exploring the idea of a 1940s or ’50s travel poster. The challenge was to find an illustration that would reflect the book’s Northern setting. In my search I discovered the work of designer Cameron Stevens; I borrowed his image of Algonquin Park to try out on the cover.
