City of Vancouver Book Award shortlist announced

The finalists for the 25th annual City of Vancouver Book Award, which honours books that celebrate the city’s history and culture, were announced yesterday.

Two non-fiction works, a memoir, and poetry collections comprise the shortlist.

The finalists are:

  • Jancis M. Andrews, The Ballad of Mrs. Smith (Hedgerow Press)
  • Brad Cran, Ink on Paper (Nightwood Editions)
  • Amber Dawn, How Poetry Saved My Life: A Hustler’s Memoir (Arsenal Pulp Press)
  • Harold Kalman and Robin Ward, Exploring Vancouver: The Architectural Guide (Douglas & McIntyre)
  • Sean Kheraj, Inventing Stanley Park: An Environmental History (UBC Press)

The shortlist was selected by a jury consisting of Hager Books owner Andrea Davies, award-winning poet Elee Kraljii Gardener, and retired city librarian Paul Whitney.

The $2,000 prize will be presented at the Mayor’s Arts Awards Gala on Nov. 22.
