Awards: Maurice Mierau wins 2016 Kobzar Literary Award

Winnipeg author Maurice Mierau took home the 2016 Kobzar Literary Award on March 2 for his 2014 non-fiction title Detachment: An Adoption Memoir, about the authors’ family’s experience adopting two Ukrainian boys in 2005.

The prize is administered biennially by the Shevchenko Foundation for excellent fiction, non-fiction, drama, or poetry titles on Ukranian-Canadian themes. The recipient wins a $20,000 purse, and their publisher, $5,000. Each shortlisted author – this year including Grant Burday for The Delusionist (Anvil Press), Orest T. Martynowych for The Showman and the Ukrainian Cause (University of Manitoba Press), Marsha Forchuk Skyrpuch for Underground Soldier (Scholastic Canada), and Stacey Zembrzycki for According to Baba (UBC Press) – is awarded $1,500.
