Poem in Your Pocket Day, an event that encourages readers to carry a specially selected poem around with them and share it with others, will be extended to Canada for the first time ever on April 21 as part of National Poetry Month.
Poem in Your Pocket Day was first celebrated in New York City in 2002 and extended to all fifty U.S. states in 2008. This will be the first year that both Canadian and U.S. poets will be featured in the Poem in Your Pocket Day celebration guidebook, created by sponsors the Academy of American Poets and the League of Canadian Poets.
Jennifer Benka, executive director of the Academy of American Poets, says in a release: “We’re thrilled to be working with the League of Canadian Poets this April to promote contemporary poets and poetry in both our countries and across borders. Seeing as we both introduced and organize National Poetry Month, collaboration makes sense.”
