Independent booksellers and authors nationwide are gearing up for the second annual Canadian Authors for Indies Day on April 30, following the success of last year’s inaugural event.

More than 100 bookstores and nearly 800 authors are registered to participate in the festivities to celebrate and raise awareness of independents. Here are just a few highlights:

  • Toronto’s Type Books’ all-day programming not only marks Authors for Indies, but the store’s 10th anniversary. Matt Cahill, Claire Cameron, Kyo Maclear, Mariko Tamaki, Frank Viva, and more will be present. Attendees can snatch up a limited edition printing of André Alexis’s Giller Prize–winning novel, Fifteen Dogs, and other exclusive swag.
  • In Vancouver, Book Warehouse Main Street is hosting Authors for Indies founder Janie Chang, Brett Josef Grubisic, Billeh Nickerson and eight other authors to hand-sell books, while Book Warehouse West Broadway (Black Bond Books) will see Jeremy Tankard, musician-writer Bif Naked, and more.
  • Just hours away, Amazon.ca First Novel Award–winner and Giller-nominated Alix Hawley will be making book recommendations at Victoria’s Munro’s Books, with authors Susan Juby, Ali Blythe, Caroline Adderson, Irina Kovalyova, and others.
  • McNally Robinson Saskatoon will see Yann Martel, Alice Kuipers, and others pass through to sell books, perform readings of their own titles as well as ones by their favourite authors, and partake in a meet and greet with readers.
  • All four of Toronto’s Book City locations (Yonge Street, Bloor West, Danforth, and the Beaches) will see appearances by authors of all genres, like Kenneth Oppel, Kathryn Kuitenbrouwer, Alissa York, David Mezmozgis, Guy Gavriel Kay, and BookThug publisher Jay MillAr and managing editor Hazel Millar.
  • On the east coast, Wolfville, Nova Scotia’s the Box of Delights Bookshop welcomes local authors Dean Jobb, Christy Ann Conlin, Jan L. Coates, and more as guest booksellers.
  • The Bookmark’s Charlottetown and Halifax locations are cooking up a day of events featuring Sharon McKay, Carol Bruneau, and more.
  • Kidlit author-illustrator Ashley Spires will make an appearance at Delta, B.C.’s Black Bond Books on Ladner and at Albany Books, while author Barbara Reid will be peddling books and recommending titles at Toronto’s Ella Minnow Children’s Bookstore alongside E.K. Johnson and others.
  • R&B Novel Teas in Niagara Falls is hosting readings by local authors, book signings, and an art gallery, with an opportunity to donate non-perishable food items to charity.
  • Marie-Louise Gay, Marie Lafrance, Bonnie Farmer and others will be touting titles at Pointe-Claire, Quebec, children’s bookstore Livres Babar.
