Shel Silverstein is about to be published digitally for the first time. On Feb. 18, HarperCollins will release an ebook version of The Giving Tree, an iconic title by the late children’s author who forbid publication of paperback editions of his books.
The ebook celebrates the 50th anniversary of the adored picture book about the lifelong relationship between a boy and a tree. The book was first published by Harper & Row in 1964, the same year Silverstein released three other titles, including Uncle Shelby’s Zoo. The Giving Tree went on to sell more than 10 million copies worldwide.
Silverstein’s nephew and archivist Mitch Meyers told the Hollywood Reporter, “It was important to make this amazing book available to kids who primarily use e-readers and tablets and wouldn’t see it otherwise.”
So far there are no plans to release other Silverstein titles as ebooks.
