Book events at the Canadian National Exhibition

Among the thrill rides and various bacon-wrapped confectioneries at this year’s CNE, there are also some literary listings worth checking out.

On Aug. 27, Authors at the Harbourfront Centre presents a sneak peek of what’s to come at the 2012 International Festival of Authors.

Ian Hamilton, author of the acclaimed Ava Lee series, is set to appear, along with Beach Strip author John Lawrence Reynolds and Brad Smith, author of Crow’s Landing. Q&Q‘s own review editor Steven W. Beattie will moderate the panel on mystery writing.

Over at the Arts, Crafts, and Hobbies building, the Ontario Library Association is hosting an exhibit to commemorate winners and nominees of the Blue Spruce Awards. The annual awards honour authors and illustrators of the best picture books, as chosen by Kindergarten“Grade 2 students throughout Ontario.

The exhibit (which runs until Sept. 3) features work from more than 65 artists nominated in the last 10 years, as well as illustrator signings and special appearances by authors Kari-Lynn Winters, Sean Cassidy, and Frieda Wishinsky.
