The woman behind the man

For those who still have the stamina to continue pondering the JT LeRoy case, Salon has an in-depth (five pages) profile of Laura Albert, the woman who created the LeRoy persona and wrote his works. Mind you, they don’t actually have any recent input (that is, a confession) from Albert herself, though the writer of the piece (Jack Boulware) says he’s talked to many of her friends and acquaintances.

As for the question of whether Albert’s work will survive on its own without the LeRoy myth to hold it up, Boulware suggests that it won’t. “Now that Albert has been exposed, it’s likely that in a few years, nobody will care about JT LeRoy, as we all move on to discussing other things,” he writes. “His books will sell out their print runs, maybe even be reprinted for novelty appeal. His fictional life is already immortalized in Asia Argento’s film. Knoop’s version of the hoax, produced by the Weinstein brothers, is likely to be pop culture’s final fling with JT LeRoy.”
