Kobo unveils e-reader

After months of speculation, Kobo unveiled its new e-reader at the CTIA Wireless conference in Las Vegas last night. The most salient details are: it’s eInk-based; it’s $149 (U.S.); it’ll come pre-loaded with 100 public domain titles; and titles can be downloaded via USB or wirelessly through Bluetooth.

According to a press release, the Kobo eReader will be available first at Indigo Books & Music in Canada in May, followed by Borders in the U.S. this summer. The release goes on to say that “it will be the first of many dedicated e-readers preloaded with the Kobo eReader software.”

One thing the release does not mention is the device’s manufacturer. Prior to the announcement, it had been rumored that Research In Motion, makers of the BlackBerry, would be manufacturing the Kobo.
