Position Purpose:

CookeMcDermid is one of Canada’s leading literary agencies, with offices in downtown Toronto, representing many bestselling and internationally known writers and media figures.  We are looking for a bright, positive, hard-working, and level-headed Agency Assistant to join our vibrant team. The ideal candidate will be one who is interested in learning about book and publishing markets and who can support the agency’s efforts in marketing, sales, working internally with other administrative colleagues, and externally with clients, publishers and other industry professionals.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:


  • Maintaining the CMD website, with frequent updates to the clients, deals and news pages
  • Creating daily content for all social media accounts
  • Creating and updating author marketing materials
  • Issuing regular announcements of deals and other client and company news
  • Assisting with additional marketing initiatives
  • Handling requests for copies of books

Agent Support

  • Coordinating and scheduling internal meetings and sales trips for agents
  • Checking phone lines remotely/reception duties when office re-opens
  • Managing the agency’s general inquiry inbox
  • Distributing trade publications internally
  • Maintaining internal tracking of titles’ key dates
  • Inputting and updating publishing contacts in Salesforce
  • Updating and disseminating industry sales data reports
  • Assisting with event planning
  • RSVPing for and purchasing tickets to online events as needed
  • Reading alongside agents

Minimum Experience Required

  • Minimum of one (1) year of related experience in an administrative role
  • Experience with Salesforce considered an asset
  • Experience with Squarespace considered an asset

  • Knowledge of and interest in learning about book and publishing market


  • Fluency in English (verbal and written)

Working Environment

  • This position is Hybrid (remote/in-person). Candidates should have the ability and technical capacity to work from home and be within commuting distance to Toronto offices when re-open
  • Access to reliable internet, and private office space to work
  • Hours of work are Monday – Friday, 9:00am – 5:00pm
