Position: Manager, Editorial, Design and Production

Reports to: Director, Editorial, Design and Production

Division: Publishing 

Location:  800 Bay Street*

Here’s what you’ll be doing ….

You’ll oversee editorial, design and production workflows for the Publishing division. You’ll be responsible for delivering on editorial and production schedules, and building and maintaining relationships with clients, editors, authors, vendors, and freelancers.

As a member of the department’s management team, you will participate in strategic planning, communicate the Press’s strategic goals to the department, and plan the support and implementation of these goals. You’ll set overall editorial, design and production values, standards, and policies; oversee all phases of the editorial, design and production process; streamline schedules; and explore opportunities for cost savings and new efficiencies in the overall pipeline, while maintaining a high quality of editing, production and design. You will also work towards integrating teams within the EDP department to remove silos and encourage collaboration.

*For this position, we currently have the option of working totally in office or in a hybrid model. This position may initially require some in-office time mixed with work from home during the onboarding phase.

Key responsibilities:

  • Build a high-performing team; responsible for the recruitment and retention of highly skilled talent; participate in development plans for direct reports, ensuring that team members are continuously elevating their capabilities
  • Direct, supervise, and oversee day-to-day operations through collaboration with the department leadership team
  • Lead or support vendor initiatives, including typesetters, printers, and freelancers
  • Oversee the design program; assess workflow including cover design approval process and create efficiencies where possible, while maintaining a high quality of design
  • Lead the reprint and Print on Demand programs at the Press, while ensuring optimal scheduling and cost management
  • Maintain a high quality of editing while looking for cost and schedule efficiencies; motivates teams to produce high quality publications on time and on budget
  • Establish and communicate clear priorities and sense of direction to team; clarifies roles and responsibilities; adapts style to suit individual and business needs
  • Track and enforce project schedules and deadlines; plans and organizes handling of special projects
  • Promote positive relations with clients, editors, authors, vendors, and freelancers resulting in a customer centric culture of success, innovation and ongoing goal achievement
  • Provide or work with the team to provide submission and publication metrics
  • Recognize when change is necessary, leads new initiatives, and develops an effective plan to implement positive change; foster continuous improvement and innovation
  • Lead or participate in the integration of new technological solutions for editorial/production processes

Here’s what we are looking for:

Education, Qualifications, and Experience:

  • 5+ years’ experience in a scholarly publishing environment
  • Previous managerial experience an asset

Knowledge, Skills, and Attributes:

  • Demonstrated leadership skills, a strong editorial and production background, and proven ability to maneuver in a fast-changing environment
  • Excellent planning and organizational skills
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to motivate staff and encourage collaboration
  • Demonstrable knowledge of editing, design, production, and project management in a publishing environment
  • Proven abilities in change management with successful outcomes with excellent problem-solving and prioritizing skills
  • Proficiency with budget planning and proven management skills
  • Ability to continuously monitor quality standards and to review and refine workflow processes
  • Proficiency in Excel, Word, Adobe Professional, familiarity with Adobe Creative Suite, experience with an xml workflow, ebook production, and ability to adapt to new databases
