AN ARTFUL LIFE
An accompanying catalogue for a joint exhibition at the Dulwich Picture Gallery in London and the Art Gallery of Ontario in Toronto, From the Forest to the Sea: Emily Carr in British Columbia (Goose Lane Editions) surveys the iconic artist’s work from the 1890s to the 1940s, in particular her connections to First Nations culture. Co-editors art critic Sarah Milroy and Dulwich director Ian Dejardin provide contextualizations alongside contributions from artists, scholars, and anthropologists.
ONE DEGREE OF SUZUKI
Written before his grandson Tamo Campos was arrested at the B.C. Kinder Morgan pipeline protest, David Suzuki’s Letters to My Grandchildren (Greystone Books) offers personal anecdotes and words of wisdom for a younger generation. Salt Spring Island writer Briony Penn’s The Real Thing: The Natural History of Ian McTaggart Cowan (Rocky Mountain Books) is the first official biography of the nature-television pioneer, who, among his many accomplishments, was responsible for hiring a young scientist named David Suzuki.
