Country Matters

by Tom Zsolt

Ontario’s ever-changing landscape, rural inhabitants, and crumbling architecture are the subjects of Tom Zsolt’s elegiac Country Matters. With the same measure of care that an art restorer brings to a faded painting, Zsolt’s photographs reveal a way of life that is rare and fleeting, capturing it on the brink of extinction. As the forward unabashedly declares, it is “a book of record and of memory.” The images are timeless, a child in a swing, a church on a street corner, and immediate, men tasting grapes in a field, a woman walking with her horse. They are also contradictory: In severe shades of black, white, and silver, they document a part of Canada that sits strikingly close to the country’s largest urban centre, and yet “is a place where the land and the people are inextricably linked.”
