Duff the Giant Killer (formac First Novels Series)

by Budge Wilson, Kim LaFave, illus.

Shoot for the Moon Robyn (formac First Novels Series)

by Budge Wilson, Kim LaFave, illus.

The titles in Formac’s First Novels series feature established authors and illustrators writing for younger readers (hence the series name). With well-known writers such as Budge Wilson, Monica Hughes, and Ted Staunton, and illustrators such as Mark Thurman, Kim LaFave, and Bill Slavin, it is no surprise that this series is a winner. In Duff the Giant Killer, two rambunctious young boys cause no end of trouble when a neighbour mistakes their enactment of a sword fight for the real thing and calls the police. Robyn, in Shoot For the Moon Robyn, jumps at the chance of singing in front of the class, even though she has never actually taken singing lessons, and she can’t really practice because the noise will wake the neighbour’s new-born twins. LaFave’s illustrations in Duff the Giant Killer are especially good, highlighting climactic scenes with humorous and energetic drawings. Both of these Budge Wilson stories are entertaining and funny and present believable characters interacting in a natural way that will quickly involve the reader. The format of the books is also inviting, with its short chapters, and large type. These First Novels are sure to become First Favourites with many beginning readers.
