Eco-fun: Great Projects, Experiments and Games for a Greener Earth

by David Suzuki and Kathy Vanderlinden, Jane Kurisu, illus.

Appropriately printed on recycled paper, Eco-Fun contains 48 science activities that are designed to increase readers’ knowledge and appreciation of specific elements of the environment as well as raise their consciousness about ecology. Suzuki and Vanderlinden introduce the book by stressing the interdependency of air, water, earth, energy, plants, and animals. With the exception of the last two, which are combined into one chapter, a chapter is devoted to each of these elements, with its own introduction, hands-on activities, experiments, and projects. Each spread is well organized with a list of required materials, clear step-by-step instructions, and an easily understood explanatory paragraph entitled “What’s Going On?” Many spreads also contain sidebars that encourage the reader to extend the investigation. Black-and-white illustrations, which enhance the text, combine with white space to give a varied, uncluttered look to the pages.

While many (almost half) of the activities can be found in other books, including Suzuki’s Looking at Plants and Looking at the Environment, the catchy titles, games, upbeat tone of writing, and shorter sentences make this book more accessible to young readers. Several long-term projects as well as an extensive glossary and index make this book a good resource for science fairs and school curriculums. Teachers, however, would do well to help their students make connections between their discoveries and ways in which they could improve the world’s environment since this is not always addressed in each of the activities.
