Fast Break (Sports Stories series)

by Michael Coldwell

Jeff loves being on the basketball team at his new high school, but he isn’t so keen about some of the activities of the guys on the team – things like shoplifting, drinking, and bullying Russell Rhuland, the tall, clumsy school “geek.” Eventually Jeff leaves the “in” crowd to hang out with Russell and a tall girl named Elizabeth, who also likes basketball. When a local three-on-three competition is announced, Jeff gets a crazy idea…. Although Fast Break provides plenty of on-court action, it is an unexceptional novel, with one-dimensional characters, and a story that lacks credibility. Readers may want to check out another title in this series, Hockey Night in Transcona, for an example of a more involving sports story.
