When William Kurelek died in 1977 at the relatively young age of 50, the Canadian artist left behind a vast legacy of paintings, many hanging in major galleries around the world. Born in rural Alberta of Ukrainian-Canadian parents, Kurelek was hugely influenced by the prairie landscape, its people, and its customs. Kurelek’s rich, detailed autobiographical tapestries are gathered together in Kurelek Country: The Art of William Kurelek, which features 60 full-colour reproductions and a brief but informative essay by historian Ramsay Cook.
