Strutting It! The Grit Behind the Glamour

by Jeanne Beker

If you have any interest in fashion (and probably even if you don’t), you know of Jeanne Beker. The fashion media icon is back with a third title for teens, following The Big Night Out and A Passion for Fashion.

Strutting It! is all about modelling. Beker has had a front-row seat to the fashion world for more than two decades, and she peppers the book with quotes and first-hand observations, covering everything from breaking into the business to the reality of life on the road. The book is also replete with profiles of some of the world’s top models, including early supermodels such as Cindy Crawford and Iman, and contemporary stars like Agyness Deyn and Daria Werbowy.

This book will not encourage illusions about fashion stardom. Rather, it is candid about the fact that modelling is tough work and not for the faint of heart. Long hours, demanding standards, fierce competition, and lots of time away from home are par for the course – and that’s only if a model is successful, which the odds are against. Beker does a wonderful job suggesting ways for young models to stay grounded and healthy. She also shares important tips on careers beyond the catwalk, as well as opportunities for those who aren’t built like typical high-fashion models, but still want to be involved in the industry.

Though at times repetitive, Beker’s prose is simple and straightforward. Aspiring models will find lots of fodder to help them decide whether or not they really want to strut it after all.
