Little ones may be even more reluctant to settle into bed once they hear what the Night Children get up to after dark. In Sarah Tsiang’s poetic tale, the mischievous kids (drawn by French illustrator Delphine Bodet as waifs with monster-faced hats pulled low over their brows) scamper and play, strewing trash in the alley and tickling frost on windows with spindly fingers. The imagery may prove a bit frightening for younger children, but the creepiness will hit just the right tone for more sophisticated picture-book connoisseurs.
