Why? the Best Ever Question and Answer Book About Nature, Science, and the World Around You

by Catherine Ripley, Scot Ritchie, illus.

Why? is actually a compilation of six previously published books by the Ripley-Ritchie team. The books were inspired by questions sent to Ripley when she was the editor of Chickadee magazine. Rather than simply list and answer questions that all young children ask in order to better understand their world, the author cleverly embeds the questions in a simple story that is told by colourful watercolour illustrations. Thus, in the chapter titled “Kitchen Questions,” the illustrations show a family snacking on food while preparing dinner. The conversation takes the form of questions presented in large bold font, one per double spread, typically followed by a nine-line response. Other chapters deal with questions a child might ask at bedtime, while shopping in a supermarket, during a walk, at bathtime, and during a visit to a farm.

Both author and illustrator as well as designer are to be commended for several positive features in this book. Each question is first answered by a short, direct response, which is perfect for the very young child who often doesn’t want a longer explanation. This is followed by a more detailed reply, which would satisfy an older child. The illustrations contain characters from a variety of ethnic backgrounds as well as gender roles that are non-stereotypical (e.g., a father cooking and supervising bathtime). The listing of questions in the table of contents and at the start of each chapter as well as an extensive index make this book a useful resource for both parent and child.
