The Griffin Poetry Prize gala was held in Toronto’s Distillery District last night, and as usual it was a lavish, well-attended affair. The big-time celebrity quotient seemed lower than in the past, however, and you got the distinct impression that more attendees than usual were actually interested in poetry, which made for a warm, attentive vibe.
The night’s two big winners, John Ashbery (left) and Robin Blaser.
Blaser accepts congratulations from McClelland & Stewart president and publisher Doug Pepper.
The evening’s guest speaker, U.K. poet Paul Farley (right), chats with 2002 Griffin winner Christian Bök.
