Will Conrad Black make a bookish return to public life?

Now that he’s back in Canada after serving a 42-month prison sentence in Florida, Conrad Black has vowed to keep a low profile. But in comments made earlier this week to The Globe and Mail, the former media baron (and temporary Canadian resident) said he will make an exception in order to hawk his latest book, A Matter of Principle (McClelland & Stewart), a memoir that covers his recent legal troubles and incarceration.

Here’s what Black told the newspaper about his upcoming public appearances: Apart from trying to sell books, I don’t want any more interviews, apart from one with [CBC news anchor Peter Mansbridge] that I promised him in August, and a couple when I get back to England.

So, does that mean Lord Black will be appearing sometime soon at a library or independent bookstore near you? Anything could happen. But a better bet for his reentry into public life would be the upcoming National Business Book Award ceremony, which takes place May 28 in Toronto.

Black’s memoir is one of three titles nominated for the prize, and the PR firm handling the event, Freedman and Associates, has told Q&Q that all finalists are expected to attend the invite-only luncheon being held at the Ritz-Carlton. (Q&Q has yet to receive confirmation from Black’s publisher.)

If he does show up, Black will face stiff competition for the $20,000 award. His co-nominees are Bruce Philp’s Consumer Republic: Using Brands to Get What You Want, Make Corporations Behave, and Maybe Even Save the World (M&S) and Chris Turner’s The Leap: How to Survive and Thrive in the Sustainable Economy (Random House Canada).
