Kim Thuy makes Man Asian Literary Prize longlist

Quebec author Kim Thuy and Toronto novelist Musharraf Ali Farooqi are longlisted for this year’s 2012 Man Asian Literary Prize.*

Thuy’s debut novel, Ru, was first published in 2009 by Quebec’s Libre Expression, winning the Governor General’s Literary Award for French-language fiction. The English-language version, translated by Sheila Fischman, was published by Random House Canada in early 2012 as part of its New Face of Fiction program, and was a finalist for the Scotiabank Giller Prize.

Farooqi, who divides his time between Canada and Pakistan, is nominated for Between Clay and Dust, published by Aleph Book Company. His 2010 novel, The Story of a Widow (Knopf Canada), was shortlisted for the DSC Prize for South Asian Literature and longlisted for the IMPAC-Dublin Literary Award.

Fifteen titles representing nine countries are nominated for the $30,000 prize, which celebrates novels by Asian writers. The shortlist will be announced Jan. 9 and the winner revealed March 14.

CORRECTION: Dec. 5: An earlier version of this story identified Kim Thuy as the only Canadian on the list.
