Rae Spoon, Kamal Al-Solaylee among Canadian Lambda nominees

Seven Canadian books* have been recognized by the 25th annual Lambda Literary Awards, which celebrate achievement in lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender writing. According to the Lambda Literary Foundation, a new record was set this year for the number of submissions (687) and participating publishers (332).

Vancouver’s Arsenal Pulp Press received two nominations: Rae Spoon’s First Spring Grass Fire is a finalist in the transgender fiction category and Barry Webster’s The Lava in My Bones is nominated in the gay general fiction category.

Kamal Al-Solaylee’s Intolerable (HarperCollins Canada), a 2012 finalist for the Hilary Weston Writers’ Trust Prize for Non-fiction, is nominated in the gay memoir/biography category.

Anthony Bidulka’s Dos Equis (Insomniac Press) is shortlisted in the gay mystery category, as is Jeffrey Round’s Lake on the Mountain (Dundurn Press). Alex Leslie’s story collection, People Who Disappear (Freehand Books), is nominated for LGBT debut fiction.

*C.E. Gatchalian’s Falling In Time (J. Gordon Shillingford/Scirocco Drama) is nominated for the LGBT Drama category.

Winners will be announced in New York on June 3.
