Canadian author and social activist Naomi Klein has been named winner of Australia’s Sydney Peace Prize. The prize‚ meant to honour public figures who “promote peace‚ justice‚ and non-violence‚” comes with a $50,000 (AU) purse.
Klein, who won the 2014 Hilary Weston Writers’ Trust Non-fiction Prize for This Changes Everything: Capitalism vs. the Climate – will deliver a lecture based on the book when she receives the award at the Sydney Town Hall on Nov. 11.
The prize jury explains its decision in a press release:
Naomi Klein‚ for exposing the structural causes and responsibility for the climate crisis, for inspiring us to stand up locally, nationally and internationally to demand a new agenda for sharing the planet that respects human rights and equality, and for reminding us of the power of authentic democracy to achieve transformative change and justice.
