The Writers’ Union of Canada, in conjunction with the inaugural Canadian Writers’ Summit, has launched a new campaign to stress the importance of writers to society. TWUC is encouraging all members of both the Canadian publishing industry and the public to take part by using the campaign hashtag, #WhyWritersMatter.
Emma Donoghue, Adrienne Clarkson, and Ontario Premier Kathleen Wynne are among participants so far, with Wynne saying, “Writers enhance our understanding of one another, fostering a sense of connectedness that nurtures a compassionate society. Our government is proud to support writers across Ontario, and to recognize their contributions to our cultural vitality.”
The Canadian Writers’ Summit takes place June 15–19 at Toronto’s Harbourfront Centre.
