Arvaaq Press is a Nunavut-based educational publishing company with a mandate to provide educators and parents with educational resources that are infused with authentic Northern perspectives, ways of life, and imagery. Our publishing initiative always considers stories and information in an educational context. All of our publications are developed by a team of Northern educators and language experts. These titles incorporate concepts that students are familiar with—counting, animals, family, traditional stories, and so on—within a Northern context.

Our books are designed to support students across Canada in their literacy development while providing access to materials that reflect Canada’s diverse geography, culture, and traditions.

The Project Manager—Publishing will be responsible for ensuring on-time workflow for all publishing projects. They will lead weekly meetings to ensure project progress, manage deliverables to key clients (educational contacts and cultural partner organizations), and assign workflow to internal staff and external freelancers. The successful candidate will provide editorial support in the form of acting as lead editor on key projects, in addition to ensuring an on-time and smooth path to completion for all publishing projects.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Work with the senior editorial project manager, senior design/production manager, and other internal stakeholders to ensure that multiple, concurrent projects are completed on time.
  • Manage editorial freelance relationships.
  • Manage work-back schedules for all projects and ensure that all ongoing milestones are met by various publishing departments.
  • Manage key client relationships with government partners and educational stakeholders. This will involve leading meetings, preparing reports as needed, communicating client feedback to the publishing team, and clear record keeping for deliverables.
  • Oversee distributor and sales rep relationships, presenting commercial titles to the sales teams twice yearly and ensuring sales and marketing staff have editorial assets on time and as needed.
  • Serve as editorial lead on key titles while managing editorial workflow on other titles.
  • This may require further editorial support in the form of copyediting and proofreading.
  • Report progress to the co-owners as needed and communicate owner feedback to the various internal team members as needed.

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Previous experience in book publishing (minimum 3 years) required; publishing certificate an asset; educational publishing experience an asset.
  • Project management experience an asset.
  • Strong project management skills with a proven track record of successfully bringing projects from inception to completion.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, presentation skills are essential.
  • Ability to prioritize a variety of projects and work in and lead the team at a fast pace.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively with various creators and teams.
  • Excellent relationship-builder; current connections within the small network of Canadian publishing an asset.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, and Adobe Acrobat are essential.
