Eighty-foot flying furry dragon to help Toronto indie bookstores

Written on the pages is the answer to our neverending story …

With the closing of Pages Bookstore, Ballenford Books, the Danforth location of TYPE Books, and David Mirvish Books, it would seem as though the future of Toronto’s indie bookstores is without a glimmer of hope.

Not if activist Dave Meslin can help it. As reported on Torontoist yesterday, Meslin plans to adapt a stage production of the ’80s fantastical book/film The Neverending Story to “draw attention to the plight of Toronto’s independent bookstores.”

The same man who produced and directed the live stage show of Pee-wee Herman’s Big Adventure to support Toronto’s Cyclists Union is recruiting help for his latest show, which will include “an 80-foot flying furry dragon with a dog face.”

From Meslin’s website:

I’m happy to announce (with some degree of tentativeness) that at some point in 2010, cast members will be reuniting for a live stage performance of The NeverEnding Story. The event will be designed to raise awareness about the importance (and nearing extinction of) Toronto’s independent bookstores …

Proceeds from the 2010 shadow cast event will help fund an online campaign to promote our remaining independent bookstores using a new website, banner ads, PSA videos, and searchable maps.
