Slideshow: Symposium of Letterpress Printers

On March 28, a crowd of more than 70 letterpress and literary enthusiasts gathered at University of Toronto’s Massey College for “Get the Lead Out: a Symposium of Letterpress Printers.”

Moderated by typographer Rod McDonald, the event featured a panel discussion with Stan Bevington, founder of Coach House Books; Brian Maloney, head of Massey College Press; Will Rueter, owner of Aliquando Press; Patrick Griffin, founder of Canada Type; and Andrew Steeves, founder of Gaspereau Press.

The lively conversation touched on changes in the book industry, the physical book as a fetish object, the emotional process of letterpress printing, and, not surprisingly, ebooks, which Steeves referred to as e-texts.

After the panel, event attendees, including former McClelland & Stewart president and publisher Douglas Gibson and author Kathryn Kuitenbrouwer, got a chance to print their own letterpress posters bearing the slogan Keep Calm & Print On.
