The Broken Social Scene Story Contest celebrates the 10-year anniversary of BSS’s record label, Arts & Crafts, and the band’s breakthrough album, You Forgot It in People. Writers are encouraged to submit original short stories that use one of the album’s tracks as a theme or title. With song names like “Late Nineties Bedroom Rock for the Missionaries” and “Shampoo Suicide,” there’s plenty of material from which to draw.
Submissions will be judged by Anansi senior editor Jared Bland, with BSS members Brendan Canning, Leslie Feist, and Charles Spearin picking the finalists.
Stories will be accepted until March 29, with 13 finalists announced on May 24, three of whom will be deemed winners and awarded additional prizes.
The 13 stories will be published as The Broken Social Scene Story Project: Short Works Inspired by You Forgot It In People under Anansi’s new short-story imprint, Astoria, on June 8, the same day as BSS’s one-off reunion show at the Field Trip Music & Arts Festival.
