Shane Koyczan’s anti-bullying poem goes viral

B.C. poet and author Shane Koyczan’s animated video-poem, To this Day, has gone viral in just three days, with more than two million hits on YouTube. The spoken-word poem, which rails against bullying, grew from Koyczan’s personal experience as both victim and perpetrator.

“My experiences with violence in schools still echo throughout my life but standing to face the problem has helped me in immeasurable ways,” Koyczan says in a press release. “I’ve spent years working to restore the better parts of my nature. I want to cheer on the underdog, celebrate the strengths in the lonely and outcast, and reassure the despondent that endurance is a kind of credential for this life.”

The video-poem features illustrations from more than 80 volunteer contributors and was part of the To This Day Project, which seeks to give school and families “a starting point … to confront this problem.”
