Scholastic is under fire for an instalment of the Geronimo Stilton children’s book series released last June that excludes Israel from a map.

Thea Stilton and the Blue Scarab Hunt: A Geronimo Stilton Adventure, the 11th in an offshoot series about Geronimo’s sister, recounts her adventures taking part in an Egyptian excavation. As noted by The Times of Israel on Wednesday, the text includes a map that depicts modern Egypt and surrounding countries, but shows an enlarged Jordan eclipsing the spot where Israel should be.

In response to the mishap, Scholastic has stopped shipment of the title and plans to revise and reprint.

The company’s official response:

As you have probably heard, Thea Stilton and the Blue Scarab Hunt, a title in the Geronimo Stilton series, published by Scholastic, includes a map that inadvertently omits Israel. Scholastic is immediately stopping shipment on this title, revising the map, and going back to reprint. We regret the omission which was in the original version of the book published in Italy and was translated by our company for English language distribution.

More than 100 Geronimo Stilton books have been published in English by Scholastic since 2004. The series was launched four years earlier by Italy’s Edizioni Piemme.
