CBC has announced the longlist for next year’s Canada Reads, its annual debate in which panelists each champion a Canadian title as the best of a particular theme or category. The 2016 faceoff will feature books with characters who face major transformation and change.

  • Kathryn Kuitenbrouwer, All the Broken Things (Random House Canada)
  • Patti LaBoucane-Benson, The Outside Circle (House of Anansi Press)
  • Tracey Lindberg, Birdie (HarperCollins)
  • Rabindranath Maharaj, The Amazing Absorbing Boy (Knopf Canada)
  • Emily St. John Mandel, Station Eleven (HarperCollins Canada)
  • Dimitri Nasrallah, Niko (Esplanade Books)
  • Saleema Nawaz, Bone and Bread (Anansi)
  • Kate Pullinger, Landing Gear (Doubleday Canada)
  • Antanas Sileika, Buying on Time (The Porcupine’s Quill)
  • Ethel Wilson, Swamp Angel (New Canadian Library/McClelland & Stewart)
  • Michael Winter, Minister Without Portfolio (Hamish Hamilton Canada)

The five competing books and the respective personalities defending each will be revealed on Jan. 20. The debate will take place March 21–24.
