Chapters Indigo announced Monday that it will close its 53,000-square-foot flagship store on Vancouver’s Robson Street June 30.

This follows the shuttering of seven stores last year, including Montreal’s flagship store and Toronto’s Richmond Street location, despite a reported 5.4 per cent growth in book sales for the company’s last quarter.

The Robson location is one of only two in Canada outfitted with an American Girl specialty doll boutique, along with the Indigo in Toronto’s Yorkdale Shopping Centre.

Indigo CEO Heather Reisman said in a press release that a significant rent increase made it “untenable” for the store to remain open, but that the company is “actively pursuing another location to serve the Robson trade area which we fully intend to open in 2015.”

The Robson Street retail strip is the second-most expensive in Canada, following Bloor Street in Toronto.

According to Business in Vancouver, an FGL Sports (Sport Chek, National Sports, Atmosphere) store will be taking over the building’s lease. Chapters’ nearby Granville and Broadway store will remain open.
