Betty Friedan, pioneer of second-wave feminism, dies at 85

Betty Friedan, pioneer of second-wave feminism and author of The Feminine Mystique, died on Saturday, her 85th birthday. Published in 1963, The Feminine Mystique, one of several books authored by Friedan, exposed a common but unspoken lack of fulfillment among married women in the post-war era. In her books and activism — Friedan was a co-founder of the National Organization for Women — Friedan was one of the first to publicly espouse views, now commonly held, concerning women’s rights to aspirations outside marriage and family.
