In his National Post arts column, Robert Fulford looks at Toronto antiquarian bookseller David Mason, who recently moved into a new and more spacious Toronto store, and Fulford takes a few swipes at booksellers in the bargain. Noting that Mason’s new space represents “a big improvement on his last premises,” Fulford suggests that Mason and his colleagues tend to exaggerate and mythologize their own poverty. And that’s not all: “Mason and his fellow professionals now do much of their business online, so booksellers often say this development has ruined the trade. But they were whining about trade conditions when Bill Gates was in kindergarten.”
